valentine smellentine.

well, on one the most consumer centric (thanks kenneth) days of the year, i spent it with a bunch of extremely close friends.

this year, was the first year in 5 years i had to spend alone. oh no, don't pity me lah, i actually found this year quite empowering. Anyway, valentine's day is not meant to be a selfish day (judging from how roses are priced that day) so why celebrate your love for ONE person when you can celebrate for SEVEN?

this valentine's put perspective in my view of love. love IS overrated. terribly. i thought i might just crumble in silence at the sight of necking couples or balloons with i heart you springing up in town but i was fine this year.

i had friends, who by far has cared more about me then any valentine's date or boyfriend.

i had incredible food, which has surpassed all previous valentine's day's cookouts (one was spent scrapping the pots and pans for the burnt remnants of attempt romantic food, one I had to spend because his birthday was on that day, and one... this one takes the cake. i had to sit by the roadside and eat cold storage type chicken with my date and then watch a terrible movie (of his choice)).

i had presents! (which NO valentine has ever given me.)

speaking of which, me and sera panicked because we didn't buy ours till the last minute. vivocity we came but we succumbed to our chocolate cravings and had some awesome muffins and chocolate cake at starbucks.

thank you god for the gift of cocoa!

and for the gift of sera!

and in NON-valentine's day tradition, we started exchanging stories of the most traumatising movies we had ever watched. (this i will get to in a while!)

and valentine's day is here!

our entrees include lor 9 geylang beef kway teow, hokkien mee and frog porridge.

we retired for dessert at mer's house where we had secret valentines.

i got kenneth and kenneth got me. he's wearing my present which is a drag queen mask and i got a card which says I AM A GIRL WHO CAN'T SAY NO! he knows me leh.

victor got a pretty notebook from candy.

candy got finger puppets from sera, so cute.

sera had the most appropriate gift: condoms and dental floss. from (oh make a wild guess) merlynn.

mer had some mezza nine chocolates from victor. touche my friend.

we paired up and played pictionary where me and kenneth where the underdogs and in the heat of the moment i slapped him. in a friendly non threatening sort of way lah. all is well in our land.

the night went on with talk and drinking games. by 2ish, we all went home.

the next day, i decided to cook and guess who came and helped me out?
haiya kenneth!

eh, the fruits of our labour can. there's yong tau foo soup, claypot chicken with mushrooms and fungi, celery with mushrooms and rice.

we had an awesome lunch and decided to watch a show.
remember me and sera talking about the most traumatising show we watched? i thought mine was Hostel 1 (2005). i am wrong:

cannibal holocaust takes the cake.

i don't recommend it to anyone, i don't want any of my friends to watch it. i only watched it because i caught a documentary on snuff films (i.e films that involve a real killing of a humans or humans by another human for sexual gratification and meant to be mass distributed) and that documentary said this was a snuff film.

i regret it totally.

the animal killings were real.
women were impaled and raped
men's nether regions were mutilated.
people were set on fire.

oh my god, me and kenneth didn't even have the stomach to sit through the whole thing. we fast forwarded tons of footage. please don't watch it. anyway it's kind of banned in singapore.

i'm just glad i had valentine's day to cushion the blow. :)

you and me baby ain't nothing but mammals

so let's do what they do on
the discovery channel

in loving memory of the zoo's most treasured resident - ah meng the orangutan - who passed away peacefully on the 8th of Feb 08.

the zoo. a place that holds many a memory for us back in primary school where mandatory school trips annually made us despise the place openly yet secret loved it because we could escape the pains of school.

well, it's been ages since i went there, maybe not ages, but i've always loved the place. the lush greenery, the extra effort the management puts in with the sound effects of blood thirsty lions and the air of natural animalistic-ness that hangs thick.

ah. the zoo.

well, me and mer dragged two sleepy boys (ok i dragged mer but that's besides the point) to the zoo on saturday to reminisce about our excursions back in the old days.

the two boys who lovingly sacrificed sleep for the zoo.

this bus goes to the zoo!

russ and me

the first thing we did at the zoo.

welcome to the zoo!

see you later, alligator.

monkey ABOVE the alligator. well.

we soon discovered the tiger trek.

mer's one is the most original.

purdy tiger!

pygmy hippo, he actually kissed the other one full one liplock. horny bastard.

it was raining the entire time but mer was as dry as a whistle thanks to:

fantastic plastic!

the four of us.

me and mer, the party planners.

we sat a tram because we were getting so wet.

russ was most excited about the tram.

finally we got to eat, what better than KFC!

lazy jaguar or cheetah. i can't remember.

we hopped to the reptiles section.

mega big ass python.

pretty snake also one of the most poisonous one.

snappy. these are snapping turtles. damn gross.

cuter versions.

mer's very comfortable in the reptile section.

primates were next.

heh.

ah meng's enclosure.

last but not least, we went to the marine animals site. this has to take the cake of the cutest birds EVER. (me saying that, it has to be damn cute okay.)

the next clip will show u the scariest birds ever, wait for it right at the end.
(please note: karen has an IMMENSE fear of birds.

thanks for a wonderful day.

and find some beautiful place to get lost in.

well I don't know where I'll go now
and I don't really care who follows me there
but I'll burn every bridge that I cross
and find some beautiful place to get lost

elliot smith, let's get lost.

and welcome back to the blogosphere, karen.

well, the week passed in a flash but all i can truely remember is thursday which is now officially known as GET LOST THURSDAYS.

aim of thursdays is to meet candy and sera and to get lost in singapore.

sounds quite difficult right? i've heard many a grumbles about not having enough places to go in singapore, how we are too small for our own good.

well, not true. as we discovered, there are nooks and crannies of sunny/rainy singapore yet to be unearthed. like this week:

we discovered keong siak road (plus plus plus)

keong siak road is tucked behind bustling chinatown, nearest to outram mrt. it has quaint little shops, cafes and hotels (oh my the hotels!) along the stretch.

being girls and suckers for chocolate, we tucked in to some wholesome ben and jerry's new york super fudge and walked down the street.

we discovered a small alley and to our mother's dismay, we went down the path, skipping in tow!

it led us to a small park with beautiful palm tress and people strolling and even unfriendly cats greeted us.

now the final stair case led us to craig street, home to old school telephone booths and on route to red dot building.

we hopped down to erksine road to see the famous scarlett hotel but got lost in the mystic of ann siang hill park.

we trekked to ann siang hill...

and discovered a 'happy' little gym with a probable fantastic view.

ann siang has a ghostly presence about it, even the walls seem so haunted.

after which club street was conquered and china square for a quick bite before catching a train at raffles. i went home to figure our route and:

we are mad.

but i like madness. :)
